Your Businesses, Your Neighbourhoods, Your City
Did you know that Vancouver has replaced Toronto as the most over-taxed business jurisdiction in Canada?
With a business to resident tax ratio of more than 5:1, Vancouver businesses are being taxed to the limit. High property taxes are a burden and make it difficult for businesses to compete and grow.
This newsletter tells our story of business’ contributions to Vancouver, how tax inequity is being addressed, and why a fair tax balance is needed.

In 2006 the Vancouver Fair Tax Coalition surveyed residential homeowners about the property tax issue. The majority of respondents agreed the existing property tax inequity should be fixed.
No one wants to pay more, but there was overwhelming agreement among respondents that businesses should not be subsidizing homeowners, the current situation for businesses is unfair, Vancouver’s tax ratio should be in line with the regional average, and that neighbourhood businesses are important.
We would like to hear from you again.
- What businesses do you value in your neighbourhood and why?
- Do you think the City of Vancouver should balance the property tax inequity between businesses and residents? If so, what do you think is fair?
- Do you think it is fair that businesses pay more than five times the municipal property tax rate paid by Vancouver homeowners?
